any attempt to change resolution causes session reboot

Asked by Joe Sabo

on a s3 prosavage8 , changing the screen resolution causes session restart; While it is ok since it's in the highest resolution anyway, I need to use wine which is having problems with changing the resolution which in turn, restarts my session with no change in resoolution. I am very new to Ubuntu & love it except, I absolutely need Wine to work. From what i gather and looking at what little i see for a few seconds, garbled, enlarged graphics , then restart, it appears to be my card. I don't know if there is a workaround for the graphics mode, oh, no visual effects are allowed either. or, do I need a new driver or perhaps, a different video card all together? Thank you for any input.

Seems its picked up just fine, not sure why it would bork like that although the ProSavage chips are far from great. It does say UNCLAIMED though. Can you give the output of:

lsmod

Thanks

i hope this tells something. i don't know much about the commands yet as I am new to Ubuntu. From what info i gather from the net and messing with it, i'm very sure my driver or card is giving me the trouble. I have no idea how to tell which is the problem though.

is there a way to uninstall/reinstall the driver? or adjust it somehow? info on these things are scattered around and vague when i search the net.

You may be able to find a later version, or you could try the xorg-edgers ppa. Its VERY experimental and may cause issues, but it may help
