Very Slow 12.10

Asked by Nathan Stauffer

GUI and OS functions are epically slow on my install of 12.10. Installed Ubuntu video drivers, no change. From looking at other people with similar issues it appears to require a machine specific solution that is above my present understanding.

Output fromt the command "sudo lshw -C display; lsb_release -a; uname -a" is as follows:
  *-display

This is defitately an improvement, though not a final solution. The specific things that are slow now are Dash home, Desktop Switcher, Menues, and scrolling. This is for either keyboard or mouse inputs. These things are taking .5-2sec to respond and I'm used to them being rather instant.
Thank you

If you install xfce4 and log in to the XFCE session, is it ok there?

The unity user interface in Ubuntu 12.04 and 12.10 is slow compared to the older user interface used in 10.04 and before. If you don't particularly want the new features of Unity you can try the old desktop.

Strictly speaking they are both Gnome but the Unity is much more resource hungry than earlier versions of Ubuntu.

If you want to give it a try open a terminal (CTRL+ALT+T) and enter

sudo apt-get install gnome-session-fallback

Enter password when requested. Logout then back in again selecting "Gnome Classic" or "Gnome Classic (No Effects)" as your desktop.
