Monitor is the likely culprit, it is an Effinet Systems EFL 1501X (lcd screen).
I am unable to find drivers so far, only old versions and then, as a newcomer to Ubuntu, I am unsure of the methods needed to try changes.
It is confusing that the system only runs in low graphics mode, but is able to display a high quality image as desktop background.

Thise things need an xorg.conf file to be nice, if you sniff around online you will find sample files. You will need

gksudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

To get write access to the file.

Can you help with this problem?
