For anyone still not sure how to work around this bug, run gconf-editor from a terminal window, expand apps, click on gnome-screensaver, right click on themes, and click on edit key. Click ont the value, then remove it, click ok, then exit out of the editor.
There is no need to do a complete reinstall to change your screensaver setting.
I'm still seeing this bug.
