Low screen resolution, IO error reading EDID

Asked by Timjh

I installed Ubuntu 9.10 yesterday, and I'm having a problem with screen resolution, namely, that the available resolutions are lower than what my setup is capable of (my preferred resolution is 1280x1024). I have the Nvidia GeForce 210 video card running in a Dell Dimension 4700. I have installed the proprietary Nvidia driver (185.18.36). I'm wondering if the problem may be with a failure to read the EDID file? I'm really jazzed about Ubuntu, just hoping to solve this issue. Thanks!!!

a) Here's what I get when I run xrandr:

Screen 0: minimum 320 x 240, current 1152 x 864, maximum 1152 x 864

I've been able to find the solution to the problem, which turned out to be that I needed to add the monitor Horizontal and Vertical Refresh Rate numbers to the xorg.conf file. I found this blog entry useful, among others:
