Unable to boot 9.10 after upgrade from 9.04 with nvidia video card

Asked by RHFeenan

I have upgraded, and also fully reformatted my computer from 9.04 to 9.10. The CD works fine, because the upgrade works on other computers. But my desktop will not boot now. I hit ESC at the GRUB prompt and I get two Kernels listed. One works when I select it, but the latest one does not.

They are: 9.10 Kernel 2.6.31-15 (will not work)
9.10 Kernel 2.6.28-16 (works if I select it)

I noticed people having problems with a GeForce board, and I do have a GeForce video board, but never had problems in the past with booting.

The Live CD will not even work using the 9.10 on this machine.

Can I either select the older Kernel which works, or is there a reason for the machine not booting?

Thanks
BobF

I have removed the GeForce FX5200 board and my computer boots normally.

ok boot to recovery root console and run this command:

apt-get --purge remove nvidia*; apt-get --purge autoremove; apt-get clean; shutdown -r now

You will also want to go into your BIOS to disable the onboard video card which is apparent from you removing the FX5200 card (systems will NOT boot if no video card is detected). This makes the system less complicated.

You will now have zero nvidia drivers, you can then reinstall them, sounds like they didn't make the upgrade

Actionparsnip: Thanks for the information, I will try this out when I return home from work today.
