My suggestion is not upgrade to 12.10 , because 12.04 is an LTS version and will be supported until April 2017.

Regardless my opinion if you want to upgrade to 12.10 you can do it.

See here how : http://askubuntu.com/questions/203301/how-to-safely-upgrade-from-ubuntu-12-04-to-12-10/203302#203302

Thanks

Optimus stinks on anything but Windows. I doubt you will get any success here. Nvidia have stated they will not be supporting this outside of Windows. You will get a poor battery life and your CPU fan will no doubt continually.

If you intend to install anything but Windows this mess is best avoided altogether as it simply doesn't work well at all in Linux/Ubuntu etc.
