Screen is garbled when running Ubuntu 12.10 live (unstable) from a USB drive..

Asked by sladner84

When I try and boot 12.10 beta 2 from my USB thumb drive my screen is all garbled.. I have the Nvidia 9400GT graphics card.. it works perfectly while running 12.04... now just for the heck of it I removed the Nvidia card and retried it using the onboard graphics card and it works.. how do i get it to work WITH my 9400 GT card installed?

Thanks for your help

Ubuntu 12.10 is in beta stage (version). The stable version will be released 18 October.

Another thing might be the driver. Do you have closed source nvidia's driver installed ? or you have nouveau ?

OR

maybe you need the nvidia-173 driver and not the nvidia-current (in case you have nvidia-current installed).

Thanks

I dont know what Nvidia driver Ubuntu 12.10 uses while running from a USB drive but all I know is when I boot 12.10 beta 2 from my USB flash drive with my Geforce 9400GT my screen is all garbled and you can see to do anything correctly... but I as soon as I took it out and was running from the onboard video card it was runing just fine..

Ubuntu from default uses the open source nouveau driver. There is not nvidia driver installed. You must install it from additional drivers menu , or via terminal.

As I said before , Ubuntu 12.10 is not stable yet. Maybe this problem will be fixed in the latest stable .iso (18 October).

There is a bug open already with your problem : https://bugs.launchpad.net/nouveau/+bug/1049176

You can close this question as solved and comment there . Also do not forget to use the "Yes it affects, me" button . It is important for a bug to be fixed.

Thanks
