If you run:

gksudo nvidia-xconfig; gksudo nvidia-settings

Then set the refresh rate to something as well as set the resolution you can then click 'save to x config file' and then 'quit'

You can then run:

gksudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

you can then set the refresh rate in the screen section and reboot. If you don't get a desktop, hold SHIFT at boot, select recovery mode, select root then run:

mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf_old; reboot

And you will be back where you are now.
