Blank monitor on boot

Asked by DaveC

Running 11.04 and all working fine then one day monitor was blank on start up. Sometimes displays multi-coloured rectangles before going blank. Also blank when I boot from command line using startx. Upgraded to 11.10 from terminal but same think happened. After 2 week break it worked fine for an hour then froze and now is back to normal.
In syslog and kern.log I have entry saying "nvidea module license 'NVIDEA' taints kernel" but don't know if this is relevant.

Happy to provide any info.

It's nvidia, not nvidea. I suggest you boot to the old kernel or root recovery mode and uninstall the nvidia driver. You can then boot to the new kernel and reinstall the proprietary driver again. It is rare for proprietary video drivers to survive release changes.

Can you help with this problem?
