cannot reboot after upgrading from 10.04 to 12.04

Asked by john ziegler

I have a dual boot system that has Windows Vista on the first partition of a 500GB drive and Ubuntu 10.04 on the 3rd and 4th. I upgraded to 12.04 with Upgrade Manager and everything went fine. The problem came when the system needed to reboot. It gave me an error message something like "root for \ cannot be mounted, continue to wait or manual mount." I try to manual mount but I don't know what to do at the prompt so I can just restart and boot into Windows with no problem. Can I repair this with Boot Repair? Do I need to make a boot cd with 12.04 to do it?

Did you use the proprietary nvidia driver in Lucid? If so I suggest you boot to root recovery mode and uninstall it, then reboot and reinstall it in Precise.

I am not sure. How do I get to root recovery mode? I just tried it again and the actual message is "drive for / is not ready or present."

Hold SHIFT at boot and select recovery mode, then select root. Nobody is born knowing how to get to root recovery mode. The web is a fantastic source of new knowledge.......

I held SHIFT and it took me to the same error message and when I tried to go to the "manual mount" menu item it took me to what looked like a terminal prompt and I did not know what to do from there.

I decided to try to reinstall the grub but it did not seem to work so I just thought I would install 12.04 from scracth. It seemed to go well until I got to the screen that asked "Where are you?" and then it froze and I could not do anything but a hard shutdown. I tried to get to windows but the grub is messed up and will not let me go any further than grub recovery prompt and I don't know what to do from there. I can boot from the 12.04 cd that I made, thank God, or I would be out of luck with a totally broke machine. Now I am trying to figure how to fix the grub so I can get back into Windows. Can anyone help. Should this be put in another area so more and different people will see it?

Can you help with this problem?
