Ubuntu 12.04 LTS crashing frequently

Asked by nikhilesh

I just installed 12.04 LTS and am running a few simulations in Matlab. I am not sure if it is because of matlab or something else, but 12.04 crashes completely and brings me back to the login screen.

Does running "dmesg" show any related error messages?

IF the RAM is Ok, it might be realated to a recent fix of the properitary nVidia driver. The bug involved memory access and that seems to go wrong according to the error message. In this case you would have to wait until they release an other fix or use the Open Source driver "nouveau", which has some limitation.

Hi guys

I think I have a similar problem like this one that is being described. I have a netbook (asus eee pc 1005 HA) and since I updated ubuntu to 12.04 version it crashes randomly and constantly (like 4 or 5 times / day). Basically I'm doing someting and it crashes and goes to the log in screen. I being tired of this situation that just happened after this update. I would like to ask you if you can help me fixing this crash.

Thank you

What version of the nvidia driver is everyone using? I'm using the latest 'stable' version (304.43) on Ubuntu 12.10 and I find it much less stable than the previous versions. It reports one or two of a selection of Xid errors (eg 13, 39, 56) and then crashes X. Often it locks up the entire machine, requiring a hard reset. nvidia don't respond to either their forums (http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=14) or their support email (<email address hidden>).
