Can't boot Ubuntu 12.04 on dell studio xps

Asked by Daniel Jones

This is my first experience with Linux so downloaded a USB ISO to boot from that before I commit to a hard disk install. I get a purple Ubuntu load screen, followed by what looks like a trace log with 2 notable errors. 1st: 'kernel panic - not syncing: fatal exception in interrupt'. 2nd: 'panic occurred: switching to text console'. I tried both the 64 and 32 bit versions and wind up with the same message. I have also read other post about inputting various commands into a console, but have no means to get there first. Again I am completely new to Linux.

Dell Studio XPS 1340 laptop
64 bit windows
core 2 duo
nvidia gforce graphics

How do I add this option? When I choose to boot Ubuntu from USB, it goes straight into execution. Where do I do this at?

Put ISO on a CD also from a separate download and added the suggested boot command. Still froze on trace screen before ever reaching desktop with flashing caplock. I've read of similar troubles on these Dell models, but most seem to have been resolved. Starting to suspect an underlying hardware failure in my unit. Anyone else concur or have another solution I can try?
