How to get 3D support in nouveau driver ?

Asked by zebul666

I have installed ubuntu 12.04 on my pc with a geforce 4 MX 440.
No nvidia driver is shown in the "Additional proprietary driver" panel. nvidia 96 needs an old xorg from what I understand. and refuse to be installed

nouveau is fine for me execpt that I would like some basic 3D support and decoding of video.

So how could I know if I have everything already installed and it's just that nouveau that does not support this card (http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/FeatureMatrix is not very encouraging for NV10)

Or is there any package that I need to install to get 3D support ? (something like gallium 3D)

Running firefox makes X eats 100% CPU sometimes.

Tried another browser, like chromium. It may use less CPU
