Fresh install of ubuntu 12.04 on a dell T7400 workstation: crash to login screen

Asked by Simon Morris

I have just put on a fresh install of ubuntu 12.04 (set up as dual boot with windows 7) on a dell T7400 workstation. I am getting periodic crashes out to the login screen. I have not yet found a clear cause - i.e. the crashes do not seem to be obviously related to any single activity. A copy of the /var/log/syslog for the period covering one of the crashes ( and my logging back in) is appended below. Any advice would be much appreciated.

  Sincerely,

       Simon Morris

have you tested your RAM using memtest from Grub?
Do you have the latest BIOS?

Thanks

High, what are you kernel Parms ? I have A10 bios and can only boot with ... noapic nolapic, and then SMP is disabled ?
On various other choices, CPU 0 will freeze and the boot hangs. I am running one hard disk from SATA-0 (LSI hardware is disabled), and have tried AHCI and IDE modes. Sata3 is disabled and Sata2 is DVD.

Are you getting 8 cores from lscpu ?

Thanks for the interest. I did run memtest just to check, and the computer passed. I am running the original (old) AO2 BIOS. I think 'Reason' is correct that this is the same problem as #980519, which is in turn linked to #973096 and lots of others, so it seems to be a bigger problem than my machine. I'll follow those bugs with interest, as it is currently stopping me from working.
