If you installed the nVidia driver through the Additional drivers applet, go back there, choose the nVidia driver and select the Disable button. If you used the binary installer downloaded from the nVidia site, run it again with the "--uninstall" option. That will uninstall the current nVidia driver.

I don't think it's recommended to install an older version, though, at least from the Ubuntu repositories.

Before you start, however, could you check the multi-monitor settings from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NvidiaMultiMonitors, "Setting up Multi Head"? I think you'll just need to set up multiple monitors again from the proprietary nVidia control panel.

Thanks much!

The "NvidiaMultiMonitors" documentation was a bit old being contemporaneous with
Lucid 1004.

Now at 1204 Precise a few more encrustaceans have been added to the GUI now
Unity vs then Gnome.

i did find a terminal and did

sudo sh -c '/usr/bin/nvidia-settings --?

Which opened a Nvidia panel.

From there it has (so far) been great to use the Nvidia panelalia!
