after install of Ubuntu 10.* and 11.* blank screen on Dell XPS 8300
I have tried MANY MANY posted solutions on the vast number of posted solutions; some seem to work, but after some restart the solutions never permanently stick...
system hardware:

symptoms:
after install; the grub menu comes up as expected, I boot in normally and get a blank light purple screen.

Add the boot option:
nouveau.blacklist=1 nvidia.blacklist=1
You will boot with the nv driver, you can then uninstall the proprietary driver then reboot. You can then reinstall the driver and should be ok.
Proprietary video drivers rarely survive release changes and it's a good idea to uninstall them before you reboot afer an upgrade
