Problem booting up

Asked by Tim O'Callaghan

I have been using the latest version of Ubuntu without problems until today.

It won't boot properly it comes uo with a black screen with the following

ubuntu.with linux 3.0.0-17-generic
the next line is the same except (recovery mode) has been added. In all there are 11
choices the only thing that changes is the number 17
I have tried all 11 lines to start up but to no avail. All that happens is that I see lots of programming. Please help

What video chip do you use?
Does the system have a make and model?

Seems to use an nvidia chip. Try the boot option:

nouveau.blacklist=1

@Tim O'Callaghan
Your explanation of how you applied the boot option is unclear. Please tell us which technique you used, as described at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132. (For example, you might answer by saying you used "How to temporarily set kernel boot options on an installed OS (not wubi)").

If you did not use one of the techniques described there, then it seems likely that you are not doing it correctly. In that case, please read the instructions on that page. Please remember that you need to apply "nouveau.blacklist=1", not "nomodeset" (as is the example used in that forum thread).
