problems maximising avi files on gnome mplayer and vlc

Asked by sarah olley

Whatever I want to watch will play fine as long as the window is below a certain size but if I maximise the window it sticks and jumps and I have NO idea why. Moreover, totem won't work at all despite the fact I have downloaded every gstream add on available. Any ideas on how to fix it? It isn't asking for any additional plugins or anything so I am at a loss. Thanks in advance.

If I knew what it was and how to get it, probably. I am not that great with computers but I am trying to learn how to fix some stuff for myself.

Paste the command into the terminal and press ENTER
Copy the output and paste here as an update
