Ubuntu 11.10 not starting

Asked by alexander browne

I have been using Ubuntu 11.10 for months and it has been working perfectly. Yesterday I had update manager notify me of a heap of security updates. I updated these, it requested a restart and it restarted find. Then I start playing with Wine, trying to get sketchup 8 working on the machine. No luck there, it kept crashing during the extraction. Nevermind. I also completed the rest of the updates the update manager had stocked up, finished what I was working on and shutdown. I started it this morning to find that it appears to stall at the screen with the ubuntu sign and the 5 dots. The dots are all purple and it just sits there.

I can boot into recovery mode, and have a live disc. How do I get from here back to work in Unity 3d?

once i had the same problem in 11.04. i booted the live disk and took the backup of essential data and reinstalled the OS. It happens because the data blocks gets corrupt due to sudden power off in HDD.

Right, I managed to get into the machine, removed by nvidia drivers, reset the xserver, and then once back in unity I added the nvidia driver version 179 and restarted.

This worked fine, and then I opened nvidia xserver and configured my two screens as they were before. Saved the config, and then restarted. This then happened:

Has something changed in the updates over the last two days to mean that this config (that was running for months before now doesn't work?

Solved this. Purged the drivers again, reinstalled Nvidia X-Server, applied the [current] drivers to it, v. 295, a few restarts to get my twin view back again, and all it working fine.
