graphics lock up issue upon first boot after install with nvidia

Asked by Ryan Davis

I recently attempted to install both Ubuntu 11.10 and 12.04. Neither worked... The live-cd image doesn't work at all, I then used Wubi to install inside of windows. Upon restart after the install the only way I was able to make anything happen is by starting in graphics safe mode. This brought me to the install page with the features of Ubuntu, the install ran fine but when it gets to the Ubuntu start-up screen with the five dots it goes through about 3 cycles of the dots lighting up and then the screen turns into a garbled mess, sometimes it is black stripes across the screen and other times it's my windows desktop all pixelated and scrambled. I have an nvidia GEFORCE GTS360 graphics card, and I have heard it could be somehow related to this. I was wondering what I can do to get into ubuntu and bypass this graphics crash so I am able to get on linux.

Add the boot option:

nouveau.blacklist=1

Some nvidia chips, don't like the nouveau driver. The boot option blocks it and the nv driver is used instead. You can then install the nvidia driver after install (You will ned the option on the first boot of the installed OS too).

Using wubi doesn't change the way the hardware is accessed so using it doesn't change anything. Personally I'd go for the true install as it is less complicated.

Blacklisting nouveau was successful and I was able to get into ubuntu. Now that I am in, when I click the install ubuntu icon on the desktop i pick the language and then the next prompt asks about downloading updates and installing proprietary mp3 plugins, when I hit continue the mouse icon turns to the loading symbol and the install freezes at that point. I would like to do a full install, but I get stuck at this point.. any advice on what I could do to make the install work would be appreciated.

Don't use the plugins thing. It can cause issues.
