configuration for monitors

When I try to run Ubuntu 11.10 I get this error on screen "could not apply configuration for monitors"
And so O am stuck with the screen res of 1024 x 768 as before it was 1024 x 1080 or other weay round but any way my graphics card is an Nvidia Geforce 8400GS I dont know what has caused this but can some one please help me out?

Try to set resolution manually in xorg.conf.

Is it 32 or 64bit architecture, reading through websearch rather recommends 64bit installation.
