11.1 Install sets Monitor Scan "Out of Range". No display and can't proceed.

Asked by barker333

I tried to run the Ubuntu 11.1 Installation from DVD.

It gets to a grey screen with an "Ununtu" logo and red-dots indicating progress.
I assume it is inspecting my system and loading drivers at this point.

After a little time the screen goes blank and my monitor displays an error message indicating "Scan out of Range".
The monitor indicates "122.4kHz / 112Hz".
This seems odd for UK (I'd have expected 50/100Hz, or possibly 60/120Hz if you insist on a US standard).

My PC has an Intel i7 64bit processor.
NVIDIA GeForce 210 graphics card.
I am using an old Sun Microsystems CRT Monitor via VGA connector.

When booted with Windows (XP or 7) the monitor is just seen as a 'generic plug-and-play' device.
With Windows 7 I have set the graphics to the max available resolution (1600 x 1200) at a screen refresh rate of 75Hz with very acceptable results.

I would have expected the Ubuntu installation to give me a 'vanilla' default monitor setting without any problems (eg. VGA at 100Hz) and for me to later adjust the resolution / refresh rate manually to get the best out of the monitor.

What can I do to get it to default to a sensible display setting?

Add the boot option:

nouveau.blacklist=1

Should help. You'll need it in the installed OS first boot so you can install the proprietary driver.

Thank you for your reply.

Please note however that I am having this problem with the Installation DVD - I don't yet have any installed OS. So I can't edit boot options.

How can I add a boot option to the installation proceedure of the DVD?

Also I think I don't need a proprietary driver (at least not to get the basic installation done).
eg. Windows uses it's standard generic driver.
All I need is to get it to set a sensible default monitor setting when I boot the DVD.
[ Some additional background:
I have previously used a Linux-based CD system recovery / anti-virus tool which had a similar issue with the display when booted using the default settings (I don't remember which one).
This tool had a command-line boot and simply chosing a different boot window-manager option gave me a working display sufficient to use the software.
So I think that Linux standard drivers can do the job - it just needs to be given the correct display parameter(s).
I guess its defaulting to a scan rate which is not supported? ]

Surely there must be some way for me to set options at the start of the installation, or to interrupt it so I can change the display settings?

I can't find any links from the Ubuntu homepage to documentation about the installation (iso).

Can anyone help?

You can edit the options of the live cd. See this link:
