Upgrade to 11.04 causes unreadable screen

Asked by Stewartbrock

I just upgraded a 2005 desktop PC from 10.10 to 11.04. On restarting the screen is unreadable. I can just about make out familiar shapes and locations on the desktop (not Unity, hardware won't support apparently), but nothing is readable. What do I do, bearing in mind nothing on screen is remotely legible? I couldn't see anything in the forums.

JUst to add as well I think from searching around that if I could get to the login screen and opt for ubuntu classic I might be Ok, but as I say screen is illegible so I can't even find the login screen. I think in my previous set up I was on auto login.

Hi

As I can't read the screen I can't check what the hardware is to identify the GPU. It is a MESH Computers PC from 2005 if that is any help.

What graphics chip does it use?

I found my original MESH customer support manual from which I think it is a NVIDIA chip, but there are no more details in the manual. Is there any way I can check on the PC given the problems with unreadability of the screen?

Hi Andrew

I am fairly sure that I have found my way into system settings>systems but I can't tell which icon is for log in screen settings.

Any chance you could tell me then I can try and log into Ubuntu classic? The at least I'll know whether that is the limit of my problems.

I just managed to find my way through and have successfully launched classic no effects version and I have my PC back.
Thanks for taking the time to offer help. I muddled through in the end.

regards
