does ubuntu ignore the xorg configuration in recent versions?

Asked by ray

the gui tools did not recognize my new panel. the screen resolution was wrong. so i tried to reset re-generate and edit xorg configs manually. it did not change a thing. where does ubuntu get the screen info from? what exactly does the 'detect display' button do? it found nothing. well, finally the nvidia driver resolved that for me. still not a good feeling to be unable to fix things that were fixable in the past.

if an xorg.conf file exists, it will be used. udev is used to autodetect things but (especially in cheap monitors not giving edid) the display must be manually defined. this is very common for sis video chips too.

i have to use one for my nvidia chip as the detected settings are crazy. 300dpi makes text 1" tall and the mouse pointer and buttons go tiny
