after update, video card not being used

Asked by Scott Conover

I updated Ubuntu 11.4 and my screen resolution has been reduced. I checked it out and my hardware manager says the video card is active but is not in use. I believe this because my resolution is screwy. The big problem is that I am a super-green Linux user and know nothing about how to fix this. I read some forums about this exact same issue that gave some directions, but I don't understand it well enough to even follow those directions. Can anyone give me a solution in the most basic terms possible--assume that I don't know how to do anything in Linux. I need to get my resolution back in-line.
Also, does the latest Ubuntu 11.10 auto fix this problem?

Sorry to be a pest, but I want to start using Ubuntu full-time and I need to start learning about this stuff.

Thank you!

What video card are you using?
I doubt upgrading to Oneiric will automatically fix anything...
