How to close the X Server in Ubuntu?

According to NVidia, I need to close the X Server inorder to install NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-290.10.run. But they don't give any directions!

What is the output of:

sudo lshw -C display; lsb_release -a

Sorry for the delay - I installed Ubuntu on a USB 250G drive & am having
lots of problems with it. Currently cannot boot into it. So am wiping the
drive & will reinstall on a standard drive. Thanks for getting back to me -
I appreciated it.
