After install of new NVidia card, unable to access Ubuntu

Asked by Peter Saxon

Have Ubuntu 10.04 installed, but after installing new NVidia Geforce 550Ti, am unable to access Ubuntu. Tried LiveCD, downloaded NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-285.05.09.run to desktop, followed Community & NVidia docs with no success. As a newbie, I would appreciate simple instructions to get me up & running again

If you want the 285 driver you can run:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates; sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get -y install nvidia-current

the drivers are packaged for you, you will very rarely manually download ANYTHING in ubuntu.

What video device did you use before?

ATI Radeon X1600. Thanks so much for your prompt reply AND for the code.
It installed OK. Now since I am logged in with LiveCD, will that have installed into my current version after I reboot??
I'll wait for your reply before I do that.
