Nvidia driver interferes with dual monitor support

Asked by izzy

I have an Nvidia NVS 160m graphics card and when I install the drivers for the card I cannot use a second monitor. Without the nvidia drivers Displays settings is able to detect my monitors, I am able to configure them as I please and they work. once I install the drivers displays is not able to detect any external monitors, the information on the laptop monitor, or the drivers that I am using. When I try to configure my monitors through the Nvidia setting tool, the dual monitor support does not function properly. Also every time I want to change the monitor setting through the nvidia tool I have to restart my computer and in one case it rendered my Ubuntu install unusable. How do I make the Nvidia drivers work correctly so I can both dual monitors and all the benefits of drivers?

Run:

sudo nvidia-xconfig; gksudo nvidia-xconfig

Setup the display and remember to click 'Save to X config file'
