Why is the nv driver missing in oneiric?

Asked by Cory Davis

The xserver-xorg-video-nv package doesn't seem to be available in Oneiric. I have a very old Vanta card that seems to depend on it as it is not supported by the proprietary drivers or nouveau. I can get by with the vesa driver but suspect nv gave better performance. So where has nv gone? is this part of the plan?

It does appear to have been removed. Weird.

Could possibly report a bug. You may need to create an xorg.conf file to set better parameters for the driver

The nv driver, as i understand has been replaced by the more advanced nouveau driver.

Nouveau has been the default for a while:

Thanks mycae. Your first link suggests nv has been removed because it is not maintained. That leaves me a bit stuck because nouveau doesn't support my card (Vanta LT). A good excuse for an upgrade I guess.

You can try recompiling the old package, however it may not work as it is unmaintained (depends on the exact problem, which I am not aware of).

Download the orig.tar.gz, diff.gz and .dsc files at the bottom of this page:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/en/source/natty/xserver-xorg-video-nv

then follow roughly these instructions:
http://www.moosechips.com/2008/09/ubuntu-rebuild-a-source-package/

Note that you need to install the build-dependencies (apt-get build-dep) by hand using synaptic, the software centre or the command line (apt-get install), using the dependencies listed on the package page above.

and instead of
apt-get source package

you have to run
dpkg-source -x *.dsc

in the folder with the files you downloaded above.

Again, its a shot in the dark.

Can you help with this problem?
