Cannot SEE anything after HP logo using UB 11.10.

Asked by kristi

Please do not tell me to type in terminal. I know normally that would be simple to update my Nvidia GPU with some commands I don't understand. I'm a new ubuntu user. Everyone keeps saying press shift to get terminal. I cannot SEE anything after HP LOGO Boot/ing screen. I can load the Ubuntu Live install CD. I tried to type in the advanced menu line after boot options but apparently that isn't a terminal. I pressed f6 and changed NOMO setting to X, as suggested in #ubuntu chat. I have pressed shift for 11 hours..nothing other than Invalid format appears on-screen. My CRT monitor shows "Resolution 59.9 is not compatible with this display, check settings". How can I change something without being able to see. I have to pick Try Ubuntu if I want to use my pc. Like a moron I deleted Win7.

Please help as my PC is now a paperweight!!

I don't know where to enter the command. I had a boot: prompt from hitting f1, esc, f6, but it gave me command unknown. I also typed it under options but nothing changed.
