boot stops at "checking battery state"

Asked by skatehoc19

I have a HP DV5 notebook P8600@2.4GHz 4Gb ram. After upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04
Boot screen gets to" checking boot state" and HANGS.
Can not go no further.
Tried rebooting many times, no success.

Did you install proprietary drivers then reboot and it started happening?

I upgraded through the update manager so what ever video driver it was using
at the time.
I am guessing nvidia 173 recommended driver.
I upgraded my desktop the same way last week to 11.04 then to 11.10 it has
the same driver with no problems.
Thanks for your time.

I suggest you uninstall the nvidia driver. They very rarely survive upgrading to the next release and cause issues like this. Once you boot using the open driver, you can then reinstall the proprietary driver.

I have solved this problem myself.
i booted to command line I then copied xorg.conf.failsafe to xorg.conf.
Then normal boot.
sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf.failsafe //etc/X11/xorg.conf

I have been using unity for few days now. My opinion Gnome 2xx much better.

That was pretty simple and straight forward..but was late as i had to reinstall the OS with ext4
Thanks and will keep in my reference notes... but as mentioned earlier nvidia is always a problem in linux... and could not find any solution to that..
Thanks
