which graphics card for Ubuntu 11.04 classic

Asked by black-beret

PC - Compaq Pressario SR2102FR
OS - Originally Vista - now Ubuntu 11.04 classic
M/board - Asus M2N61-LA Micro-ATX with Nvidia GeForce 6100 nforce 20
Monitor - 1680 x 1050

I would like to fit a better graphics card (PCI or PCI express x16). Are there limitations to what I can fit because of suitability to the motherboard and availability of drivers for Linux? I'm considering a GeForce GTS450 but don't know if suitable for Linux. What happens about the "built-into motherboard" graphics?
If anyone has any views or can point me in the right direction I would be very grateful.

Hello

Say that the limits are that your pc can withstand. for the disponibiliter for Linux (any distribution) should see the list of compatibility here. https://help.Ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/WirelessCardsSupported I think.

Bonjour,

Thank you for your response. The notification email that I received stated that more information was needed but didn't specify what exactly. This is not a bug so I hope I haven't posted incorrectly. The link suggested is for "WifiDocsWirelessCardsSupported" which I don't believe to be relevant.

Merci.

About the "built-into motherboard" graphics, there are issues about Intel graphic chipset. Kernel's programmer are working hard on it, and some new code was released in previous kernel 38 and will be released in next kernel 39.
I have a
    product: G94 [GeForce 9600 GS]
and it works fine.
Nvidia provides its one proprietary driver.
