11.04 My display goes white either completely or a secondary window

Asked by Richard Hayes

If I open a number of windows on the GUI I get to a point where a secondary form (such as a Save As form) goes completely white. The fields are obviously active because you can see the mouse pointer changing as it passes over invisible fields.

To get around the problem, I close the relevant form and a couple of other programs and then try again. The problem is thus solved.

This has also happened occasionally when I attempt to open another application. However this is more disastrous and in this case I need to shut Linux down using the power button.

Reading elsewhere about displays going blank I have seen requests for lshw -C display
I did this and got this result:

If your using Compiz, disable it.

In the Additional drivers, select NVidia 173 then restart.

Hi,

I did as you suggested
I uninstalled compiz.
I then selected the 173 driver and restarted.
Now I have no GUI controls of menus at all. The gui is effectively now unusable.
I am access this site using my laptop.
How do I set the gui to classic view from grub?
I like the new view, but until it is stable, I am unwilling to continue using it.
Thanx for the help so far.

Thanx

Uninstalling Compiz was a disaster. It took unity with it.
I used the terminal to re-install unity and I can now see the menus.
I will run with the 173 driver and unity for a while and see what happens.
I will close this issue now
Thanx
