11.04 does not boot

Asked by Tom Anderson

I upgraded from 10.10 (which worked fine) to 11.04 and now the system does not boot. It hangs with a black screen. I can boot into recovery mode and failsave operation. I have an Nvidia GeForce 9500 GT display card.

Remove the nvidia driver and reboot, then reinstall it (I assume you installed the proprietary driver)

I tried what you suggested ... I booted in recovery mode / failsafe, opened "Additional Drivers" and removed the active video driver. I rebooted and tried to see if it would boot normally - but it hung with a black screen. So then I rebooted again into recovery mode and activated the "version current / recommended" driver. Rebooted again and the boot still hung with a blank screen. I tried this again and just waited .... after 2 minutes of "black screen" the machine did boot into 11.04 with unity. Any suggestions on how I might shorten the 2 minutes to a few seconds as one would expect??
