system video upgrade breaks xserver and dumps to cli

Asked by Ronald Malloy

Hello all!

I am trying to upgrade my Ubuntu 10.10 workstation to use a newly install video card instead of the on-board shared memory video output. At the same time I also removed a dlink 802.11 wifi card.

I have disabled in the bios the on-board video (ATI), and installed the nvidia PCI-E card. I did not change anything in the O/S before doing this. I disconnected the DVI cable from the on-board video port, connected it to the new Nvidia video card DVI port, powered up the machine, and after a brief moment of no splash screen, was presented with a command line login through the new video card. I was able to login, but now I do not know the command line apps I need to use to reconfigure Xwindows to recognize and use the new video card. I tried to use some hints that I found here, like "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg", but nothing happens at all at the command line.

Any hints or web links that will direct me to the info I need will be greatly appreciated!

Regards all,

Ron

Hello all!

Ok, it fixed it, and I'm sure I know what was happening, but I cheated in my fix. I wanted to add a PCI-e video card to my workstation, turning off the on board video to dedicate that ram to the O/S. I was trying to install a Nvidia video card, but did not have the drivers installed before, so the machine dropped me to a command line. I "fixed" it by installing an ATI PCI-e video card instead, turning off the onboard video, and Ubuntu 10.10 found the video card without help and now the workstation works correctly. I had expected the O/S to offer me the ability to install new drivers for the hardware, but that was not the case.

Regards all!
