I updated from Ubuntu 10.10 to 11.04 and immediately after trying to reboot I got a black screen and I haven't been able to boot since

Asked by Oscar Rivera

I had been using Ubuntu 10.10 ever since its release without any problems but when I updated to 11.04 even though apparently everything went well, I always get a black screen and cannot boot into Ubuntu anymore. I have looked for support in launchpad as well as the ubuntu community forums and I have come to find out that this is actually a pretty common problem. If this isn't a bug then I don't know what is. I am debating re-installing the good old Ubuntu Maverick Meerkat and saying good-bye to this Natty Narwhal until they figure out this problem. I thought that a stable release was supposed to have all of these issues sorted out and fixed during the alpha and beta stages. I guess I was wrong. If anyone knows how to fix this, please let me know. I have tried all of the suggestions regarding the Nvidia cards (which I do have) and nothing seems to work.

I had the same problem. I have a Toshiba Tecra M2 which has a Nvidia Geforce FX Go5200 display adapter.

It seems that all the problems have to do with the drivers for this adapter. The upgrade from 10.10 fails and does not upgrade and build the Grub files correctly.

Using a different computer I downloaded 11.04 and created the CD. I then was able to do a new install and reformat the old partition and at least Grub was okay and 11.04 would boot. I had a good backup of my files so I was okay.

With this install, shutdown restart fails. I get a black screen and no grub menu. I have to turn off the system and reboot.

I installed the Nvidia 173 driver. It fixes the shutdown problem but if you use any of the screen edge functions, especially the upper left corner function, the system will hang or be so slow you think it is hung. The Nvidia driver is 173.14.30. Nvidia web site does not even show this driver. I tried turning off all the screen edge functions but it did not fix the problem completely as now at times the window will render wrong and you can not see the windows correctly. I had to remove this driver.

I tried to install the experimental 3D driver. This appears to be a nouveau driver from Gallium. It seems to be built on an older vesion of The Mesa Project nouveau driver. The system was slow and I was back to the problem with shutdown restart no working. I removed it.

I reverted back to the default driver which appears to be a nouveau driver from the Mesa project. I think it is 2.1 Mesa 7.10.2 So right now I am living with shutdown restart not working. I must power down and reboot.

That is where I am at now. I have worked on these 11.04 problems for several hours now and not very happy with this release. But it is working

Add acpi=off when booting. hold down shift until boot options come up and edit the grub.cfg.

The only problem after is that you have no acpi functionality

@ actionparsnip:
I use a Nvidia Quadro FX 500/600 video card. It is not new by any means but my understanding is that the OS should adapt to whatever hardware I have and if the video card is not compatible with Unity there is an option for me to continue using GNOME; however I am not getting anything at all. The only thing on my screen that is not black is the white blinking cursor at the top left of the screen. I appreciate everyone's help on this matter and I will try and follow your advice and keep you informed of my progress.

I have a similar problem after upgrading to NATTY (fresh install) and using Nvidia drivers.
Card: GeForce 6200.

I did like you, installing and removing Nvidia drivers. Reboot etc.
I tried all the options. I become an expert in rebooting.

See my question # 157186 in launchpad

So I did a new install with my old Maverick distro, till a solution be found.

With Maverick, no problems.

I call the new upgrade NASTY NARWHAL.

I will keep searching for a solution.

Can you help with this problem?
