Ubuntu 11.04 beta2: Freeze while watching a video

Asked by Ali

Hello,
When I watch a video, sometimes (about every 30 seconds), it just freeze, and play again and again the same last seconds of the video, just like it was a loop. And, when I move the mouse, it just stop doing that and just continue to play the video.
I really think that's a driver problem as I have that problem with with all video player, including vlc. I actually use the "nouveau" driver. I wanted to try with the NVIDIA drivers, but when I install it, the computer just freeze at gdm login. I also tried to install the .run NVIDIA driver, to see if it works with it, but I just didn't succeed on installing it : it says that I have to remove nouveau, which I did.
My graphic chipset is a 9800MGT.
I'm going to try with the generic video drivers, and I'll add the result in comment of that bug.
Thanks

So, I finally tried with the generic driver. but it did the same.
So, I started to think that's it's an audio problem and decided to try, using my bluetooth headset instead of my computer speaker, and guess what, it just works fine.
I was wrong at the beginning, that's not a display problem, but an audio problem, should I make an other bug report ?

Finally, it doesn't seems to be an audio problem, I just don't understand : with the generic drivers and nouveau the problem is the same :
- With speaker : it freeze and just play again and again the same audio part of the movie, but not the video
- With my bluetooth headphone : it freeze and that's all
In the two case, I have to move the mouse to make it continue playing the video
So here it is, that's everything I can tell about the problem, if you need somes additionals informations, I'm in your disposition.
Thanks.

Turned into a question as it needs more detail to be a bug report.

Does this happen with any video, or just with a particular video file?
Does it happen with many videos in a particular format (AVI, MP4, OGM, FLV)?

What app are you viewing the video in?

@ Federico Tello Gentile : it seems to happen with all videos, I already tried an AVI and an OGG (the one which is in the example folder of ubuntu). And I juste tried with a flash video on youtube, and I had the same problem.
@ actionparsnip : I tried with Totem, vlc and gnome mplayer.

ok so you have 2Gb ram and are using 1Gb which is fine. Have you tried running:

sudo apt-get -y install nvidia-current

Then rebooting. You should then be using the proprietary driver and it may help

I did what you said, I rebooted, but the driver doesn't seems to be used. How can I make it be used ? (as there are no more xorg.conf in recent ubuntu version, right ?)

Sure but if one exists it will be obeyed. Some nvidia chips need the file

Well, I finally get it :)
It tried as you said, but I couln't boot with the drivers.
So I uninstalled all nvidia drivers, and installed the .run of nvidia website : problem, it was incompatible with Xserver 1.1
And finally I got the beta drivers, which are compatible with Xserver 1.1 and works fine.
I just tried to play a video : and no more bugs.

But, maybe I should signal that as a bug, no ?
Because, being forced of using a beta version of a proprietary driver isn't really of satisfactory.

I'd log a bug but I think it will be rejected as there are drivers in the repos which are good and will upgrade when new ones are added, your way requires you to manually update the driver. Your call. If you are happy then it's fine. The video was probablylagging due to yourGPU adding no grunt to th proceedings, leaving your CPU to do everything
