Display res max is 1024x768; need 1600x1200

Asked by Michael F Baxter

Previously had Ubuntu 9.10 installed along side another Linux version and Windows XP with each on separate drives. All of them detected the 1600x1200 capability of Gateway VX700 monitor and TNT Riva video card. Replaced 9.10 with 10.10.10, but now the max resolution is 1024x768. Tried copying the working xorg.conf from the other Linux distribution, but Ubuntu X would not start. Tried editing same file, but X still wouldn't start.

So what do I need to do to restore the 1600x1200 high resolution capability to my Ubuntu 10.10 installation?

It may be as simple as going into System->Administration->Additional Drivers and enabling the video drivers.

I'm unfamiliar with the Riva card so I'm not sure if proprietary drivers are available but that's how I solved it my nVidia cards.

Well, the issue has been resolved. Here's what was done:
1) Install the proper Nvidia drivers using the Ubuntu Software Center
2) Reboot. X crashed upon startup due to partial /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Moved it out of the way.
3) Restarted X: startx.
4) Once X was up and I was logged in, I copied a modified version of xorg.conf from another (working) Linux system into /etc/X11.
5) Rebooted. X started upo properly in 1600x1200 resolution.

Thanks to everyone for their assistance. You may consider this issue resolved.
