Feature request: Ubuntu support to nvidia drivers

Asked by Carmit Vinik

Ubuntu supports is only 4 of the Nvidia graphic drivers.

I want a natural way to install Nvidia Graphic drivers if I download it from the nvidia site.

otherwise, sorry about my expectations, but I expect full support for the hardware layer including the new drivers which is support the linux kernel by nvidia.

mybe a tool or script which create dev file of the ubuntu style which use the nvidia source or rpm or else distibuted driver file.

$sudo sometool nvidiasrc
which create yourUbuntuNvidiaGraphicDriver.deb

thanx

Here is how to install nVidia 270.18 / 270.26 Display Drivers In Ubuntu (From A PPA Repository)

http://www.webupd8.org/2010/06/how-to-install-nvidia-25635-display.html

Manually installing from the nvidia website is not supported at Launchpad.

See here for details:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NvidiaManual

If you do a manual install from the nvidia website and encounter issues, you will need to request help at the following location:

If your nvidia graphics card is not in this list, then you will need to tell us exactly which model and make of graphics card that you are using....

As listed in http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=122606 there are 4 families of proprietary linux drivers available from nvidia.

Each of these drivers supports a long list of different nvidia graphics cards (see ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/270.30/README/supportedchips.html ), and each of them has been packed for ubuntu in a .deb file provided in the ubuntu repositories (with different version levels for the different ubuntu releases - not all of them with the most recent version).

There are certain dependencies between the nvidia driver version and the packages delivered by ubuntu, so not each version of a certain nvidia driver can be installed in each release of Ubuntu. The packages delivered by ubuntu take into account the dependencies and will provide a working system (well - at least with a very high probability). If you download the driver directly from nvidia you have to make sure yourself that all dependencies are met and no incompatibilities arise.

As packaging a driver for Ubuntu and testing that it is correctly running needs some work to be done, the ubuntu .deb packages will not be instantly available when nvidia provides a new driver version. And due to limited demand and potential incompatibilities not all new nvidia driver versions will be backported to older Ubuntu releases.

As long as the combination of your desired nvidia driver version and your ubuntu release has not been provided as a .deb file in the official ubuntu repositories, you can look in the xorg-edgers ppa, maybe they have already built a beta version for the combination you are looking for.

What driver version do you need, and which Ubuntu release are you running?

well, i use ubuntu 10.04 and i still dont get what could be so different between my version and the new one which is relevant about this issue... i believe that even the current version dosent have full support for all nvidia graphic chipset.
we mention the issue for new drivers but there is also policy not to support old drivers(not only graphic ones) of old hardware.

I just have good intention that new linux users will use ubuntu as their first linux OS and even instead of MS WIN7.
I used to recommand Ubuntu to new linux users and I dont have all the time to support all problems (i am just a human being)
that's why i need that feature and automatic hardware support is important issue.
