over frequency

hi.. im newbie about ubuntu here... i got ubuntu 10.10 desktop edition... n im stuck when after boot from cd after loading sudenlly monitor got blank it said over frequency V:86.9 H:60 my default monitor H:31.7-68.6 n V:47.6-63.5
How to change it? the problem is i cant in to typing area or something like that... i already try install it from windows xp after finish reboot n there choice windows n ubuntu... i choose ubuntu the problem show up like i said erlier...
my computer still old... im using AMD Sempron(tm)2600+ 1.83GHz with ram 512 n my vga card is NVIDIA GeForce FX5200 (128mb)
when already over frequency i dont know what to do beside ctrl+alt+del or reset...
anyone can help me for this problem??

Looks like your screen resolution is too high for your monitor. Since you cannot simply run the system/administrator/monitors menu item, maybe you have an xorg.conf file that can be changed. You probably can log into ubuntu's virtual terminal -- type Crtl-Alt-F1 and see if you get a text login prompt. Login with your username/password and go to the directory /etc/X11
cd /etc/X11
Take a directory listing with ls
ls
If there is a file named xorg.conf, rename it to xorg.conf.sav
sudo mv xorg.conf xorg.conf.sav

Shutdown and reboot
sudo shutdown -r -t0 now

Hopefully, you will have a default, lower resolution, X working.
If not, we'll have to actually put the necessary into the xorg.conf file (or maybe edit it to see if you can just delete a high resolution mode line).

thanks ubfan... but it still not working... after booting at ubuntu...
ubuntu --> completing the ubuntu instalation for more instalation boot options press 'Esc' now --> ctrl+alt+F1 = over frequency
if i press esc --> -gnu grub version -normal mode -safe grafik mode -acpi work around - verbose mode -demo mode

E to edit command before booting C for command line

already try all option but still over frequency...

n if i press esc again it will become grub> --> i try press ctrl+alt+F1 it become over frequency again...

so i still need help for this...

Take a look at the below link to boot into a text mode -- from there you can try modifying the xorg.conf file
