is there a way to restore pc by installing linux

Asked by Derrick Matthews

A while back I made a huge mistake, I was trying to update my nvidia video drivers and noticed that afterward I had a decrease in visual performance, so I did a few google searches and found that sometimes while updating your video drivers you should do a driver sweep, I guess I download the wrong program to do this because I ended up completely wiping off my display drivers and I guess it's partition along with, the desktop model is a emachine w5243, windows vista, amd athlon plus with nvidia gt9400 graphics card, 2gb ddr2 memory, it cuts on just enough to show the emachine logo, then in about minute it's off, is there a way to fix my pc via linux instead of ordering a recovery disk.

Im not clear what your question is, is it:

1) Can I fix vista using a linux CD?
2) Can I use my PC if I install linux?

installing a wrong driver will not corrupt your windoze system or erase your partitions. it will just won't install. as far as "sweeping" goes, i never heard of that. you probably went to a malicious site and followed the instructions blindly and erased the partition yourself. there are tons of malicious sites like those around.

if it comes on then shuts off after a minute, i'd definitely say you installed a virus.

you can use the ubuntu live cd to check to see what you have left of your system that you can salvage.

yes, you can use your pc if you install linux. but make sure to copy off any important files you want to keep first.

you are misunderstanding the question I'm not trying to aking can I use my pc with linux I want to recover it I took it to best buy and I wasn't trying to pay that price they were charging to fix it, they told me that everything is there except for the display because I had completely erased that partition, so what I'm trying to figure out is can I fix that by installing linux and if so how I've tried with boot of ubuntu from usb but display cuts off so I can't follow the steps to set up everything for clean install

they told me I could either go through them or order a recovery disk but what I'm hoping is I can pass on those options and fix it with linux

"they told me that everything is there except for the display because I had completely erased that partition"

this is total bullshit, poppycock, etc. they have no idea what they're talking about.

when you boot up, press F8 repeated until you get the screen to enter safe mode. you can do a system restore.

If you provide partition table, we will be able to tell you if you have recovery partition

---------------
Please provide partition table.

If you can't boot from hard drive, boot en Ubuntu CD/USB stik and then choose "Try without install".

Open a terminal: you can either press Ctrl+Alt+T or Applications->Accessories->Terminal.

To copy/paste in a terminal, replace Ctrl+C by Ctrl+Shift+C and Ctrl+V by Ctrl+Shift+V (for historical reason, Ctrl+C is assigned another function).

Paste to terminal the following commands:

    sudo fdisk -l

where "-l" is lower case "L".

Copy/paste result into a new thread post.

the thing is I don't have a display at all on desktop I have ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop that I'm using right now but my desktop doesn't have any display out side of the 20 seconds or so that the emachine logo pops up, I desktop like early 2008, and it doesn't have an option to recover the pc back to factory defaults and can only recover to last known configuration, but when I try to do that my display cuts off. I've just tried to boot from a usb stick but before it could even load up the display cuts off.

If there is some internal error with your windows configuration, it is unlikely that we will be able to tell you how to fix it.

Recovering individual files should be fine, but we can't alter your windows configuration easily, and debugging windows driver issues is not really an ubuntu question :)

so, it looks like you haven't even tried to do a system restore. if people don't do what you tell them, why even bother?

if people don't listen to what anyone says, why do we even bother?

i seriously doubt that the problem is a missing video driver. if one is missing, windoze automatically load a generic vga driver.

you might want to download clamav and check your windoze partition for virii.

as i said already, do a system restore. it will reset your system to whatever it was before you "deleted your partition and your video driver"

@ Marcus Aurelius why bother, you are assuming that I didn't it is the first thing I did that is called common sense to try that first on windows 7 that was possible and on other newer pc's you can go and restore your pc but I got my desktop in 2007/08 and it does not have that option nor does it come with a recovery disk, you can restore it to a last known working configuration which I have done way before I even went to this site and it doesn't work still no display @ David the problem is I used two programs one a driver sweeper then revouninstaller to make sure nothing was left, but what I didn't uncheck the things not in bold which lead to my completely getting rid of my video drivers that is the nvidia and windows default, what I was trying to figure out is there a way to fix this issue via linux or is there another way to get back the display drivers.

Derrick:
We don't know. We don't use windows -- we can't answer that. Windows is a closed, proprietary system, unlike ubuntu. If it were ubuntu, we could look at the code, or fire of mails to developers if we didnt understand the code.

We can't do that in windows, nor do we wish to. Please call your technical support for your windows machine.

Can you help with this problem?
