ubuntu 10.10 black screen during install (solved) installed now just boots into windows vista no linux

Asked by Matthew Stone

Hi Guys.

I've always wanted to have a go with linux and apart from a small go at opensuse a few years ago i havent tried since. I was told to give Ubuntu (64bit) ago but since downloading Ubuntu 10.10 i've had no luck installing it, firstly the monitor going to sleep and the graphics card (nvidia 9800gt) making a vague attempt at sucking all the air out of my bedroom. after an evening of incredibly tense trial and error i managed to solve this with the nomodeset correction, it then appeared to install fine with no problems, then after i restarted it just booted straight into windows vista no dual boot options or anything. If anyone has any idea's about this it would be greatly appreciated.

just for reference my system is: intel pentium d 2x 2.8ghz (64bit) 3 gig of ram with an nvidia 9800gt graphics card with 512mb ram.

Hey Guys

Just tried version 10.04 to see if it was a one off issue with ubuntu but im back to the black screen during install even with the nomodeset, im becoming pretty certain that ubuntu just doesn't work or its not finished. I'ts a real shame because the try section on the live cd is amazing would be a real treat to see it fired up on here.

although just had a quick thought the 64bit version says amd and im using an intel processor anyone know if that could be an issue?

I suggest you stick with the 32 bit i386 version. Assuming you're using a WUBI install, I have no idea what switching from a 32 bit Windows to a 64 bit Linux would do.

Hi there Guys Cheers for responding.

I Ended up trying the 32bit 10.10, 64bit 10.04 and 64 bit 10.10. I realised i was making a massive error probably due to tiredness with working at it all night, i was telling it to use my slave drive to install the boot sector (im an idiot sometimes) although when i changed to the correct drive i then got the black screen of death again during install which kind of kicked my boot record to hell stopping access to both ubuntu and vista. I guessed that the black screen issue was due to my graphics card overheating so i left it over night to cool tried (with 64 bit 10.10) again this morning and it installed rebooted and my grub os list was there including windows (though for some reason its labeling vista as windows 7 but im not crying over spilt milk lol). As soon as i got into ubuntu properly i installed the latest nvidia drivers that it suggested and so far so good. Now im looking forward to learning about ubuntu.

Thanks Again guys really appreciate the help.

What graphics card do you have Justin? i've found that with the nvidea 9800gt the driver on the install disk doesn't give correct cooling commands to the graphics card therefore it overheats and automatically shuts everything off to cool itself. Once i got ubuntu installed and updated the video driver to the recommended one it worked.
