tried to upgrade nvidia driver to 260.19.26 but install complains that kernel script missing.

Asked by Carl Lewin on 2011-01-08

If user chooses to ignore, then install appears to complete. However when X starts Ubuntu goes into low resolution graphics mode and asks what to do. If restart X is chosen it loads ok.
I recovered my system by selecting default settings. Now the system loads normally, but several applications crash on startup (Google Earth and Boxee), Google Earth shows following when started from terminal:

Thank you for taking your time to report this bug.
How did you try to install the nvidia driver?

Carl Lewin (carl-lewin) said : #2

Hi Philip,

By downloading the installer from nvidia web site and booting Ubuntu to
command line console (no X running) and logging is as root then running
the by means of sh. (system was init3 for this)

(by the way mu O/S version is 10.04 LTS - the Lucid Lynx - released in
April 2010)

Thanks

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#When%20not%20to%20file%20a%20bug. There is also a vibrant support community available at http://askubuntu.com and you might consider asking your question there.

Philip Muškovac (yofel) said : #4

We don't officially support the drivers from the nvidia site in Ubuntu, but *if* you really want to use the driver packages from nvidia directly, you first need to blacklist the nouveau driver module since it conflicts on boot, install the kernel header packages you need, later run nvidia-xconfig to generate a working xorg.conf and finally don't forget to rebuild the driver on every kernel update.
We do provide packages for the nvidia driver though in our archive, so you are advised to use those. You can install them from the Hardware Drivers application (jockey).

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask Carl Lewin for more information if necessary.
