[Nvidia Geforce GT240] Live CD install video garbage

Asked by Robert Galbraith

After the initial setup screen that asks if I want to try, install, test CD, etc. the screen goes into a random bit pattern display during boot-up, and never changes.

I have tried the install option, same results. I have a Nvidia Geforce GT240/ with 500MBs of memory. I have tested the download with md5sum, did a Installation CD Integrity Check, everything was fine.

I tried the vga=0x31a at the end of the boot-up command. that didn't help.

The display works great in Win7 and OpenSuse. In Win7 the display is running at 1680x1050 59Hz.

System: Asus P7P55D, 8GB ddr31600MHz memory, Intel i3, Zortac Graphics card.

What Next?

download another copy then do an md5sum check to ensure that you have a good copy.

As I said in my original message "I have tested the download with md5sum, did a Installation CD Integrity Check, everything was fine." I even tried the Windows install version, same results. I need a better answer then that.

Currently have no idea. You could try solution for blank screen:
   http://ubuntu-tutorials.com/2010/05/06/ubuntu-10-04-lucid-blank-screen-at-startup-workaround/
Else could you provide a picture of screen in http://imageshack.us/

Thank you, I just tried the blank screen solution, it didn't work. I have posted my screen results @ imageshack. My display board is a brand new purchase, it's a Zortac ZT-20405-10L GT240 R. As you can see by the pictures the screen is not blank. When the CD finishes booting Ubuntu I'm left with a screen with multicolored pixels. So all I can do is a hard reset and try something else.

Why is it that only Ubuntu has this problem, not Win7, Open Suse, Fedora, or PCLinux? I have not tried any of the other live CD's

How does one file a BUG report to the Ubuntu developers?

Are you able to boot on CD, and then choose "Try without install" ?
This process uses a more reliable driver.
Could you reach Desktop, in this mode called Live Mode ?

Yes, that is what I have been trying with Ubuntu 10.10 live CD all this time. I even tried the "install" choice with all the same results. I have never been able to reach the desktop, that I know of because all I get is a scrambled screen and have to do a hard reset. I would say Ubuntu 10.10 has a real problem with some display boards.
