resume normal boot problem

Asked by Justin Lye

When I tried to resume normal boot after running recovery mode, for example, ubuntu 10.10 failed to boot into GUI and instead it went to command line, where even after logging in I 'm still at the command line. Is this normal? Or am I missing something?

If you run:

startx

do you get a desktop?

If not, run:

less /var/log/Xorg.0.log

and read through, it will give clues.

Also, what video card do you use?

Yes, startx gets me to the desktop after logging in from the command line. Thanks a lot, you're very knowledgeable and helpful.
By the way, my graphics card is the old, basic NVidia FX5200.
