Upgrade problem from 10.04 to 10.10

Asked by MartinBenoit

I upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10, after restart, it goes well until the login screen (gdm?), which shows nothing but the background image and the mouse (I expected a prompt for username/password). I tried the failsafe, but it went back 2 seconds after. I tried dpkg, but didn't seem to find Internet. I went to the console, logged in. Tried sudo apt-get update, but didn't find Internet. Tried ping www.google.com, didn't work.

Have I done something wrong? Would much like a simple fix to not reinstall all my apps. I just backed up my home folder, is there other folders to backup?

Thanks!

Martin

I succeeded to go further in typing 'sudo startx' after booting in console, but it only shows my desk wallpaper with 'my computer' icon. Nothing else. Can't open 'My computer'.

I saw in console some X errors:

(EE) NVIDIA(1): Unable to find available Display Devices for screen 1.
(EE) NVIDIA(1): No display devices found for this X screen.

But I think it is only my second monitor which is not connected.

Any log/file I should check to help me find out what's happening?

You could try
     sudo nvidia-xconfig
Then reboot, it may help
