nvidia x server wont change apply settings

Asked by myall hanckel

i installed ubuntu 10.10. i then installed nvidia driver 260. i open nvidia x server settings and configure the displays. when i apply the settings i get message 'currernt settings cannot be completely aplied. save the configuration to the x config file and restart the x server. I press the 'save to x configuraton file' button and confirm overwriting the original one. i then press 'reset' button but it resets the configuration to the original state instead of the one i saved. it would seem i need to apply the changes to be able to save them but i am unable to apply them because they have not saved and restarted.
i think it should rewrite the config file when i tell it too!
i have three monitors and can only use one. it did fix the screen resolution automatically after hanging once but wont use either display running of my gtx 470.

Run:

sudo nvidia-xconfig; gksudo nvidia-settings

You can now save the settings back to xorg.conf

If you reboot and get no desktop you can boot to root recovery mode and rename /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Can you help with this problem?
