What is the output of:

sudo lshw -C display

Thanks.

Did you upgrade frmo lucid to maverick or did you clean install?

Actually, I did an upgrade first, but the system wouldn't boot after the
upgrade, so I made a CD using my laptop and did a clean install. I don't
know the output of my display. How would I find out? Thanx for responding so
fast!

now, what is the real problem?

is it that the clean install isn't booting up?

is it that the clean install boots up but there's no display? e.g. screen is blank with blinking cursor

is it that the install boots up but the screen is garbled?

were you able to get to the logon screen?

Uh What... the problem is, that I can't use the proprietary drivers for my
graphics card in 10.10, like I could in 10.04.

I had to drop back to 10.04 because of stability issues!

Remove the proprietary driver. Your chip is supported by the 96 driver

I can't install the proprietary driver in 10.10, and whatever driver is in
10.10 has horrible performance!

Maverick uses Xserver 1.9, which the nvidia 96-series driver does not support (yet): http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=2326233&postcount=5
As the nvidia dev says, support is coming, but until then, your options are to stick with the open-source driver (nouveau) or use 10.04.

You may be interested in the latest version of nouveau, found here: https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa

I ran across an article on omgubuntu that said the same thing. Any links out there to which graphics the 10.10 system supports? Other than the graphics problem I loved the system, and for that matter still love 10.04; both systems better than Windows 7 in my book. Thanks for the Open alternative, fan for life!!!
