nvidia error - purple sceen and goes no further

Asked by Mark Black

Fresh install of 10.10 on a Samsung R580 in an extended partition (dual booting with Windows 7 Pro 64 bit).

Gets to purple screen with the 5 red dots and it goes no further.

Entered recovery mode and su username then did startx. Get the following error message:

(EE) Failed to load nvidia (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) No drivers available
Fatal server error
No screens found

So it's an issue with nvidia, but how do I correct for that?

Thanks.

Could you have a look in bug section of https://answers.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-nv
There are lot of error reported (and solved) about boot process.

Boots into Ubuntu now after going in to recovery mode and telling it to boot with low resolution. Seems to look ok but it still needs the 3rd party drivers, which I can't download because now I have a wifi problem - detects the wifi but won't connect. Great.
